Kevin Hines

In September 2000, Kevin Hines leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge, a method of suicide attempt that has resulted in death for most of the 2000 people who have made that jump since the bridge was erected in 1937.

But Kevin survived. He survived, and in the 16 years since his near-fatal try, Kevin has become the bridge between the many mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children, spouses, friends, and loved ones who made similar acts. Each person trying to put an end to unimaginable suffering, but leaving so many left behind, wondering why? What could we have done to help?

Even further, Hines, in sharing his story, is fostering a critical bridge of hope between life and death for people caught in the pain of living with serious mental illness, difficult life circumstances, and more.

Last month, the Helpline Center, in partnership with Augustana University, the Sioux Falls Community Foundation, and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, was excited to welcome Kevin Hines to speak to a capacity crowd. Unfortunately, on the morning he was scheduled to arrive, the Helpline Center was notified by Kevin’s wife that he had suffered a seizure. To soften the impact of this last-minute postponement, the Hines family generously offered a private screening of Kevin’s newly-released documentary, “The Ripple Effect”. Those that attended were impacted by learning more about Kevin’s suicide attempt, and the stories of all those impacted by his mental health struggles. Fortunately, he recovered quickly from the seizure and was able to continue his tour, and we are grateful to announce he will be in Sioux Falls this month.

Join us to hear Kevin’s powerful story on Wednesday, June 20th at 6:30 p.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. His message is one of refreshing honesty, realism, advocacy, and appreciation of the complex conditions that contribute to mental illness. He is a much-needed beacon of hope to those struggling with the pain of mental illness.
