This process should begin soon after any name change.&nbsp; Here\u2019s how:<\/p><p><strong>If the name change is related to a marriage, order official marriage certificates:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>These can be obtained at the <a href=\"https:\/\/doh.sd.gov\/records\/county\/\">County Register of Deeds<\/a>.<\/li><li>Order multiple copies (about 4 \u2013 5). Some places will require a certified copy and don\u2019t always return it or take a while to send it back.<\/li><li>NOTE: A marriage certificate is not the same as a marriage license. The certificate is a record-keeping document, proving the marriage has been completed and registered.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Apply for new Social Security Card: <\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Use the original legal order (not a photocopy), whether that is a marriage certificate or a court order.<\/li><li>The Social Security number will remain the same; a new card will be issued with the new name on it.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Apply for a new driver\u2019s license (or state identification card):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Use new Social Security card to do so.<\/li><li>See list of <a href=\"https:\/\/dps.sd.gov\/contact\/locations?agency=5\">Driver Licensing Locations<\/a> to find an office.<\/li><li>Call ahead to ensure proper documentation is in hand. Many people get turned away because of a lack of required documents when they arrive.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Update Passport: <\/strong><\/p><ul><li>If the passport is less than a year old updating the name is free. Otherwise, there is a processing fee.<\/li><li>Fill out one of the three different forms: <a href=\"DS-82https:\/\/eforms.state.gov\/Forms\/ds82.PDF\">DS-82<\/a> if the passport was issued <strong>more than a year ago<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/eforms.state.gov\/Forms\/ds5504.PDF\">DS-5504<\/a> if the passport was issued <strong>less than a year ago,<\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/eforms.state.gov\/Forms\/ds11.PDF\">DS-11<\/a> if the passport has been <strong>expired for more than five years<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Update vehicle title and registration information:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Some Department of Motor Vehicles s cover driver\u2019s licenses and vehicle title\/registration, but most states have separate departments.<\/li><li>Call ahead to ensure proper documentation is in hand. Many people get turned away because of a lack of required documents when they arrive.<\/li><li>Typically takes a few weeks to arrive in the mail.<\/li><li>If currently leasing or financing a vehicle, contact lienholder and inform them of the name change. They will provide the steps to update title.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Update voter registration information:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Use new Social Security card to do so at the local County Auditor\u2019s Office.<\/li><li>This can also be done by downloading and mailing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/eac_assets\/1\/6\/Federal_Voter_Registration_ENG.pdf\">National Voter Registration Application<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Update name with United State Postal Service (USPS):<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>It\u2019s not required to tell the USPS about a name change, but make sure to update the name and address if you are also moving.&nbsp; Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/moversguide.usps.com\/mgo\">usps.com<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Update bank accounts and creditors:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Use the newly obtained ID\u2019s.
