{"id":400199,"date":"2020-09-02T14:01:47","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T19:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.helplinecenter.org\/?page_id=400199"},"modified":"2020-09-02T14:02:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T19:02:23","slug":"vaccines-for-children-vfc-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hlc.thinkcaliber.com\/es\/2-1-1-community-resources\/helpsheets\/vaccines-for-children-vfc-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Program Overview:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The federally funded Vaccines for Children (VFC) program provides free vaccines to children who qualify, by distributing the vaccines to all states, the District of Columbia, and territories for participating healthcare providers.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">All vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and approved by CDC and HHS are covered under the VFC Program at no cost to the participating healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">There are more than 44,000 providers enrolled in the VFC Program nationwide.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Doctors can charge a small administration fee<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The administration fee is capped at $20.73 per injection in South Dakota.<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The administration fee must be waived if the patient is unable to pay.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The doctor can charge additional fees for the office visit or non-vaccine services<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Who Qualifies:<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Children and adolescents are eligible if it is before their 19<sup>th<\/sup> birthday and they meet one or more of the following criteria:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Medicaid-eligible<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Uninsured<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">American Indian or Alaska Native<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Underinsured (Underinsured children are only eligible for VFC Vaccines though a Federally Qualified Health Center [FQHC] or Rural Health Clinic [RHC].)<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Underinsured means that the child or adolescent has health insurance, but it won\u2019t cover the vaccine(s) because:<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It doesn\u2019t cover any vaccines.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It doesn\u2019t cover certain vaccines.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It covers vaccines, but it has a fixed dollar limit or cap for vaccines. Once that fixed dollar amount has been reached, the child or adolescent is eligible.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Locating a Childhood Immunization Provider:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Contact 211 for help finding a childhood immunization provider in your area.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Find a Vaccine Providers by County: <a href=\"https:\/\/doh.sd.gov\/local-offices\/vaccine-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/doh.sd.gov\/local-offices\/vaccine-providers\/<\/a><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Contact your local primary care doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or Community Health Office.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Call the South Dakota Department of Health Immunization Program: 1-(800) 592-1861 for help finding a childhood immunization provider in your area.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Find a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) if your child is underinsured: <a href=\"https:\/\/findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov<\/a><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Vaccination Timeline:<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, here are the common vaccinations all healthy children should receive, what they protect against, and how often they should be administered:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hep B: <\/strong>hepatitis B; should be given between 1 and 2 months, and between 6 and 18 months<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>RV: <\/strong>rotavirus; 2 months, 4 months and 6 months<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>DTaP: <\/strong>diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Whooping Cough); 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, between 15 and 18 months, between 11 and 12, followed by a booster every 10 years<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hib: <\/strong>influenza b; 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and between 12 and 15 months<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>PCV: <\/strong>pneumococcus; 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and between 12 and 15 months<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>IPV: <\/strong>polio; 2 months, 4 months, between 6 and 18 months, and between 4 and 6 years<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Flu: <\/strong>common strains of influenza; 6 months and then yearly<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>MMR: <\/strong>measles, mumps and rubella; between 12 and 15 months, and between 4 and 6 years<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Varicella: <\/strong>chickenpox; between 12 and 15 months, and between 4 and 6 years<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hep A: <\/strong>hepatitis A; between 12 and 23 months, and again 6 to 18 months later<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>HPV: <\/strong>human papillomavirus;
