According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Disease Control<\/a>, 73 people died in South Dakota from drug overdoses in 2017.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>How do you know if someone is overdosing?<\/strong> <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It depends on the drug and the person, but some common signs include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Slow or shallow breathing<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Small, constricted pinpoint pupils<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Gasping noises while sleeping or snoring in an unusual way (also known as the \u2018death rattle\u2019)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Skin that is pale, blue, or cold<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A slow heartbeat<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Limp body<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Loss of consciousness<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There are many other symptoms of overdose, so anything that is weird could be a sign.&nbsp; It\u2019s scary to see someone overdose, or to feel like you might be overdosing.&nbsp; A phone call can save someone\u2019s life!&nbsp; <\/span><br><br><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You might also be scared to call for help because you don\u2019t want to get yourself or your friend in trouble. In South Dakota, there are two laws to make it easier to reach out for help.<\/span><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sdlegislature.gov\/Statutes\/Codified_Laws\/DisplayStatute.aspx?Type=Statute&amp;Statute=34-20A-110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good Samaritan Law<\/a> protects you if you call for help for someone else. You won\u2019t be arrested or prosecuted for any substance use or possession crime as long as:<\/span><ol><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The evidence of the crime was found because you called for medical help for someone;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You needed and called for help because it was an immediate health or safety issue;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You stay with the person who needs help and answer any questions emergency responders have.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sdlegislature.gov\/Statutes\/Codified_Laws\/DisplayStatute.aspx?Type=Statute&amp;Statute=34-20A-111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Codified Law 34-20A-111<\/a> protects you from getting in trouble if you think you are overdosing and call for help.
