{"id":183485,"date":"2019-07-08T14:37:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T19:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.helplinecenter.org\/?page_id=183485"},"modified":"2020-07-28T10:30:18","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:30:18","slug":"measles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hlc.thinkcaliber.com\/es\/2-1-1-community-resources\/helpsheets\/measles\/","title":{"rendered":"Measles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>General Information: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Measles is a viral infection also known as rubella or rubeola and is easily preventable by a vaccine.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Measles can be serious and even deadly.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Measles was declared eliminated from the United States (U.S.) in 2000, but in 2019,&nbsp;there were 1,282 individual cases of measles in 31 states.<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1992.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Herd immunity may be weakening due to a drop in vaccination rates, leading to the increase in incidence.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The majority of people who got measles were unvaccinated.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Unvaccinated travelers or those with measles spread the disease in the U.S.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The disease spreads in communities where there are groups of people that have not been vaccinated.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Risk Factors: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Being unvaccinated<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Traveling internationally<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Suffering from a Vitamin A deficiency<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Signs and Symptoms: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fever<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Dry Cough<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sore Throat<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Runny Nose<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Red, watery eyes<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Tiny white spots (Koplik spots) inside the mouth<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Red, spotted rash<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Doctors can identify measles based on the characteristic rash and Koplik spots<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Blood tests can also be done to confirm measles<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Treatment: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">People who are exposed to measles but who have not had the vaccine can get the vaccine within 72 hours of the exposure to provide some protection against the disease. This may prevent measles altogether or just make for milder symptoms.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Those with weakened immune systems, pregnant people, and infants can receive an injection of proteins called immune serum globulin after exposure to measles.
