mold\u201d.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBlack mold\u201d also does <strong>not<\/strong> require different precautions than other molds.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">All molds have the potential to cause negative health effects, but they are not always toxic.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mold produces allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">People with allergies, immune suppression, or lung disease may be more susceptible to fungal infections.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mold has <strong>not<\/strong> been proven to cause pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cBlack mold\u201d has <strong>not<\/strong> been identified as a cause of human illness.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you believe you are sick because of mold in your building, speak with your doctor to determine the appropriate action to take.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Why Mold Grows:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mold is common in buildings and homes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mold spores can enter buildings from open doorways, windows, and ventilation systems with outdoor air intakes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Mold will grow anywhere indoors where there is excessive moisture.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Wet materials such as paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood are especially good for growing mold.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Removing Mold:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">First, identify and fix if there is a problem with water or moisture.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If the mold is less than 10 square feet, you can clean the mold up yourself.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Wear gloves, goggles, and a N-95 respirator (face mask).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent (such as bleach) and water, and dry completely.<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If using bleach, do not use more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Open windows and doors for fresh air.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Moldy absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles and carpet should be thrown away.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Do not run the HVAC system if you think it may be contaminated with mold without cleaning it first.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It is not necessary to test or identify the species of mold growing in a residence.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If mold covers greater than 10 square feet, or you cannot manage the amount on your own, contact a professional who has experience cleaning mold.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Preventing Mold:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Control indoor moisture levels and humidity.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Use air conditioner or dehumidifier during humid months.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fix roof leaks, landscaping and gutters that direct water into or under the building.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>For more information on
