Opioids can be highly addictive if&nbsp; misused. The Opioid family includes prescription drugs such as Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, morphine, Fentanyl or illicit drugs such as heroin.<br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When opioids are used outside of their intended use a person can develop Opioid Use Disorder (also referred to as opioid abuse, opioid dependency, and addiction), a disease that affects a person\u2019s brain and behavior. Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) results in an inability to control the use of drugs leading to health problems or interfering with the ability to work, go to school, and maintain good relationships.<br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Signs that a person may be dependent or abusing opioids: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Having multiple prescriptions or extra pill bottles turning up in the trash<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shifting or dramatically changing moods<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Social withdrawal\/isolation<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sudden financial problems<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Noticeable elation\/euphoria or marked sedation\/drowsiness<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Withdrawal symptoms can mimic flu symptoms and include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Headache<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Inability to sleep<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Overdose is possible and life threatening. Symptoms include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shallow breathing or breathing difficulty<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Unconsciousness or inability to awaken<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Lips and fingers turning blue or purple<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><u>Options for care:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>If you suspect overdose, call 9-1-1<\/strong><\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If the person is presenting the symptoms of overdose, call 911. You may also call 911 to request a wellness check if you are unsure of their current safety.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Call the South Dakota Opioid Resource Hotline 1-800-920-4343<\/strong> or <strong>text \u2018OPIOID\u2019 to 898211<\/strong><\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will be answered by trained crisis workers to assist in finding local resources. Texting will connect you with resources that best fit your need by answering a few questions. People may call or text for themselves or for a loved one who is struggling.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Schedule an assessment<\/strong><\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">An opioid use assessment is performed by a substance recovery professional or mental health professional. The assessment will determine the most appropriate place and form of treatment. Some options include outpatient counseling, residential or inpatient treatment.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Initiate a Substance Use Involuntary Commitment (IVC)<\/strong><\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If a loved one is experiencing an opioid use-related crisis and is refusing treatment, it may be appropriate to file a petition for Substance Use Involuntary Commitment.
