SUD results in an inability to control the use of drugs and\/or alcohol leading to health problems or interfering with the ability to work, go to school, and maintain good relationships. Common substance use disorders include Alcohol Use Disorder, Tobacco Use Disorder, Opioid Use Disorder, Cannabis Use Disorder, Stimulant Use Disorder, or Hallucinogen Use Disorder.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>When to Seek Help for Substance Use?<\/strong><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It can sometimes be difficult to recognize when substance use becomes a disorder (abuse and\/or addiction). Signs of a substance use disorder may include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Reliance on substances (drugs or alcohol) to get through the day<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Needing more of the substance to experience the same effect<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Needing to continually use to avoid symptoms of withdrawal<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Continuing to use even when you know it\u2019s causing problems in your life<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Spending more than you can afford to maintain a supply of substances<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What are the Treatment Options for Substance Use?<\/strong><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Effective treatment for will vary from person-to-person. Treatment options include medical and behavioral health services which are often used in combination.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Detoxification<\/strong> \u2013 process of eliminating drugs or alcohol from the body. Consists of three steps \u2013 evaluation, stabilization, and transition into treatment. Offered in a wide variety of settings and at varying intensity levels.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Individual and Group Counseling <\/strong>\u2013 assessment, treatment planning, and counseling services offered by trained professionals, focused on reducing or stopping substance use, may take place in a private practice, outpatient facility, or inpatient\/residential facility<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Inpatient and Residential Treatment<\/strong> \u2013 address more severe substance use disorders requiring round-the-clock attention, residents are placed in 24-hour care and may receive both medical and behavioral health services<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Outpatient Rehabilitation<\/strong> \u2013 typically addresses less severe substance use issues, treatment may include counseling, therapy and drug education<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) <\/strong>\u2013 combines behavioral therapy and medications to ease the symptoms of withdrawal, reduce cravings, and block the brain\u2019s ability to experience the substance\u2019s effects; typically used to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/medication-assisted-treatment\/treatment#medications-used-in-mat\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/medication-assisted-treatment\/treatment#medications-used-in-mat\">opioid<\/a> (methadone, buprenorphine), &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/medication-assisted-treatment\/treatment#medications-used-in-mat\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/medication-assisted-treatment\/treatment#medications-used-in-mat\">alcohol<\/a> (disulfiram, acamprosate, naltrexone), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/treatment\/substance-use-disorders\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/treatment\/substance-use-disorders\">smoking<\/a> (nicotine replacement, bupropion), and methamphetamine <br><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Support Groups and 12-Step Programs<\/strong> \u2013 non-clinical services often provided by peers or others in recovery, typically used in combination with treatment<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Specialized Living \u2013<\/strong> provides safe and supportive living environments for those recovering from SUD who want to maintain abstinence from alcohol and drugs (i.e. halfway houses, recovery homes, sober living homes)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>I Want Treatment, Where Do I Start?<\/strong><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Treatment typically begins with a general assessment in which the nature and extent of your substance use disorder will be evaluated. This will determine which treatment options are best for you. To find a facility offering substance use assessments call 211 or visit the <a href=\"\/es\/2-1-1-community-resources\/search\/guided-search\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"\/2-1-1-community-resources\/search\/guided-search\/\">Helpline Center Website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How can I pay for treatment?<br><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Many people avoid treatment for a SUD because of the cost, however, there are a variety of cost options to consider that make obtaining treatment more achievable. The Helpline Center\u2019s Substance Use Care Coordinators can also help individuals navigate which options might be the best fit for them.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Insurance companies are required to cover behavioral health conditions in the same way that they cover medical conditions. If there is insurance, check with the provider to see what they cover.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Is there an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through an employer? Some EAP\u2019s will cover the cost of the initial assessment and\/or a number of counseling sessions.
