Both programs offer monthly payments to provide assistance with the cost of living for those who cannot work as a result of their disability:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)<\/strong> \u2013 provides benefits for those who can\u2019t work due to a long-term or permanent disability and who have paid a sufficient amount of taxes into the Social Security system<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Supplemental Security Income (SSI)<\/strong> \u2013 provides benefits to help those with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 and older<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How do I Qualify for SSDI or SSI?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>SSDI<\/strong> \u2013 Must have a medical condition that meets SSA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/planners\/disability\/qualify.html#anchor3\">criteria for disability<\/a> and must have enough work credits<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Social Security may consider you disabled if:<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You cannot do work you did previously<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Your medical condition prevents you from adjusting to other work<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Your disability is expected to last at least one year or result in death<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Must have paid enough in social security taxes to accumulate the minimum amount of \u201ccredits\u201d<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You can earn up to four credits for each year of work<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Number of needed credits is based on age, generally you will need at least 40 credits<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>SSI<\/strong> \u2013 must meet SSA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/planners\/disability\/qualify.html#anchor3\">criteria for disability<\/a> and have limited income and resources<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How do I Apply for Disability?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. There are three ways to apply:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Apply in person at a <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/ICON\/main.jsp#officeResults\">local SSA office<\/a><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Complete an online application at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/applyfordisability\/\">https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/applyfordisability\/<\/a><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Call the toll-free number 1-800-772-1213<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Many people who are eligible for SSI may also be entitled to SSDI. The same application is used for SSI and SSDI. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Extensive documentation including disability and work history, medical records and financial documents are needed for the application. Many parts of the application process are also time sensitive and it is important to be aware of deadlines. SSA provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/disability\/disability_starter_kits.htm\">\u201cDisability Starter Kits\u201d<\/a> that outline the documents needed for your application and give more information on the application process.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Applying for disability can be a lengthy process. There is a five-month waiting period before payments for SSDI begin. SSI will typically be awarded a month after approval.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What happens if I\u2019m Approved?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If approved for SSDI or SSI, you will be notified by SSA and will begin receiving monthly payments after the waiting period. Your case will be reviewed regularly to ensure you continue to qualify for benefits.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you need help managing your SSDI or SSI benefits, you may consider a payee. A payee receives your payments on your behalf and uses the money to pay for your current needs.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>What happens if I\u2019m Denied?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If your disability request is denied, you can file a disability appeal. Most applicants will have to pursue two stages of appeals before receiving disability payments:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">File a request for reconsideration \u2013 you must do this within 60 days of receiving notice of denial from the Social Security Office<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If the request for reconsideration is denied, the next step is to request a hearing.<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You may consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disability-benefits-help.org\/social-security-attorney\/south-dakota\">hiring a lawyer<\/a> at this stage of the application process; legal representation can greatly increase your chances of being awarded disability<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Be aware that it can take more than a year for a hearing to be scheduled<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nearly two-thirds of applicants are awarded disability benefits as a result of their hearing<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you are denied at your hearing there are additional steps that can be taken:<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Appeal the denial \u2013 the Appeals Council will review the judge\u2019s decision<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If denied by the Appeals Council, you may make a final appeal in Federal Court<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Can I return to Work?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">SSA provides \u201cwork incentives\u201d that make it possible for those receiving SSDI or SSI to return to work while still receiving monthly payments.
