{"id":16792,"date":"2018-06-21T14:14:35","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T19:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.helplinecenter.org\/?page_id=16792"},"modified":"2021-07-14T12:50:23","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T17:50:23","slug":"bedbugs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hlc.thinkcaliber.com\/es\/2-1-1-community-resources\/helpsheets\/bedbugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Bed Bugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Identifying: <\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs are small, flat, wingless insects, approximately the size of an apple seed.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-338235 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bed-Bug.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"69\" height=\"49\"><\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs feed on the blood of people and animals and have a painless bite.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs are not known to spread disease, and are not typically considered dangerous.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Signs of bed bugs may include red, itchy bites arranged in a line or cluster on the skin.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bug infestations often occur around the areas where people sleep.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sources of bed bugs:<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Baggage and clothing infested during travel<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Infested apartment units \u2013 bed bugs can spread very easily and rapidly from unit to unit<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Secondhand furniture and clothing<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Laundromats<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Public areas with upholstered seats including, but not limited to, public transport, movie theatres, libraries, and hospitals<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Preventing:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Avoid bringing mattresses, box springs, bed frames or furniture found on the street into your home.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Check all used\/rented furniture for bed bugs.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When traveling, inspect your bed area for bed bugs.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you think you have come into contact with bed bugs, wash and dry clothing at the highest setting possible or store items in a sealed plastic bag until you are able to wash and dry them.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Limit personal belongings when spending time in areas where bed bugs are more likely to be present.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Reporting:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs in public areas: If you find bed bugs in a public area contact the South Dakota Department of Health (605-773-4945) or your local health department.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs in rental spaces:<\/span><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you find bed bugs in your apartment or rental space, it is the responsibility of the landlord to proceed with extermination. Report the bed bugs immediately to your landlord.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If the landlord can prove that the bed bugs were brought in by the tenant, the tenant can be charged for extermination.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Treating:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Bed bugs can be challenging to get rid of and often require several attempts to treat. Managing the pests can take weeks to months depending on the nature and extent of the infestation. Once bed bugs have been identified there are a number of treatment options:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hire a Professional \u2013 Professional treatments, although expensive, are typically very effective in eliminating bed bugs.
